Q: What is a Segway ?
A: The Segway® Human Transporter (HT) is the first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device. With dimensions no larger than the average adult body and the ability to emulate human balance, the Segway HT uses the same space as a pedestrian, and can go wherever a person can walk. The Segway HT allows people at home and at work to go farther, move more quickly, and increase the amount they can carry anywhere they currently walk. Top
Q: How does the Segway work ?
A: Dynamic stabilization enables the Segway HT to work seamlessly with the body's movements. Gyroscopes and tilt sensors in the unit monitor a rider's center of gravity at about 100 times a second. When the rider leans slightly forward, the Segway HT moves forward. When the rider leans slightly back, the Segway HT moves backward. Top
Q: How long can I expect my Segway to last ?
A: The Segway HT has been designed to be extremely durable. In order to deliver a durable productivity tool, we pursued two design avenues. First, we built durable mechanical and electrical systems to be in solid state, so even the moving parts were designed for longevity. For example, the motors are brushless servomotors, so there are no parts that could wear out. We then submitted the systems to extensive, rigorous testing to ensure we met our goals. Second, we created a modular design whereby if any part were to wear out or break, it could easily be replaced, ensuring a long product life. Top
Q: Can a Segway work Indoors as well ?
A: Yes, most Segway models will work indoors. Every Segway HT is designed to work anywhere people walk. In order to support indoor operation, Michelin created a special tire that is non-marring (found on the i and p Series models). The Segway HT is narrower than a standard doorway and is clean and quiet. There are zero emissions. However, the Segway XT and Segway GT models are specifically designed for outdoor applications and are generally not appropriate for indoor use. Top
Q: How safe is a Segway ?
A: The utmost care and research has gone into ensuring that the Segway HT is safe. The Segway HT's balancing technology is truly revolutionary and provides an exceptional riding experience. The Segway HT has redundant systems and sophisticated alerts built into its design, and many thousands of hours of use have demonstrated that the Segway HT is safe when used appropriately. It is important that Segway HT riders understand their responsibility to ride safely. Proper skill level and understanding of the Segway HT prevents injuries caused by loss of control or misuse. Keep in mind that the Segway HT has not been designed, tested, or approved as a medical device. Top
Q: How often should I check the air pressure in the tires ?
A: Tires should be inspected each time you ride. The air pressure in your tires should not fall below the following: 15 PSI for the i Series. 15 PSI for rider-only (no cargo) e Series. 22 PSI for a fully-loaded e Series. 22 PSI for a p Series. However, in colder temperatures we recommend more frequent pressure checks. Top
Q: What if the key will not start my segway ?
A: There are a number of issues that should be investigated. First, ensure that your key and the key port on the machine are both clean and dry. Water or moisture in the key port may interfere with proper communications to the key. If required, wipe the key port with an absorbent material. Second, check the charge on your batteries and if neccessary charge your batteries for one hour and then start your Segway HT. If the device starts, continue recharging the batteries for another 5 hours. If this does not resolve the problem, please contact Segway Product Support toll-free at 1-866-4SEGWAY Top
Q: What can I use to clean my Segway ?
A: Soap and water are the best to clean your unit. Please refrain from using products which protect and shine rubber, plastic, and vinyl surfaces, as these products may impact tires traction. Top
Q: Does my Segway have any sort of suspension ?
A: Yes, the Segway HT tires have been uniquely designed by Michelin to act as the suspension for the device. Top
Q: What kind of warranty does my Segway have ?
A: Segway LLC provides a limited warranty to the original purchaser for one year (90 days for wear items) from the date of delivery. Please see the Segway HT Limited Warranty for additional details. Top
Q: How will I learn how to ride the Segway ?
A: A free, 30-minute product orientation is included with the original purchase of a Segway® Human Transporter (HT). Segway LLC strongly recommends that customers receive product orientation prior to riding the Segway HT. The product orientation session offers more in-depth instruction than a demonstration. During the product orientation, you will be shown how to safely operate the Segway HT, perform safe controlled stops and turns, recognize and respond to important safety features, use the power assist feature, and avoid obstacles that can make you slip, trip or tip. Segway LLC also recommends that all riders read the Riders' Guide and watch the Safety Video prior to riding. Top
Q: What is the goal of the Segway Orientation ?
A: The goal of orientation is to teach the basics necessary to get you started on your Segway HT. From there, we expect that you will continue to practice, perfect, and advance your skills in the real world. We hope that you will leave orientation with the information necessary to become a proficient, courteous and respectful rider.

Q: How do I schedule an upgrade for my Segway ?
A: Please call Segway toll-free at 1-877-889-9020 (8:00 am - 6:00 pm ET, Monday - Friday) to begin scheduling your free upgrade. When you call to schedule, please have your Segway HT's serial number handy. The serial number is located under the mat on the rear edge of the Segway HT's platform. Top
